Professor James H. Sweet has been selected as the new President-elect of the American Historical Association. In the 2020 balloting for officers and committee representatives, AHA members voted to elect James Sweet as the next President of the AHA. Professor Sweet has served as Department of History Chair (2013-2016), Director of the African Studies Program (2012-2013), and Chair of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese (2017-2020). From 2016-2019 he was elected Councilor of the Research Division of the American Historical Association. Sweet is a historian of Africans in the Atlantic world. His research and teaching have focused on slavery, the African diaspora, race and nation in the Atlantic world, Brazilian history, and the history of South Africa.
