Undergraduate Advising

During the Spring 2021 semester, all Undergraduate History Advising will be done through remote appointments. We’re not in the Humanities Building right now, but we can still be a resource for your academic and career concerns. Please don’t hesitate to contact us!

History majors and prospective students can set up appointments through the History Starfish page or by emailing Scott Burkhardt or Christina Matta directly. Students who are interested in or would like to declare the History Certificate should make an appointment with Isabelle Cook or Holly Defnet through our Starfish page.

The History Department’s Undergraduate Program Office is located in the Mosse Humanities Building, in Room 3211, which is the main History Department office. You will find us on the third floor in the northeast corner of the building (closest to Memorial Library). Whether you are unsure what classes to take, you want to make sure you are going to graduate on time, or you just want to talk, we offer a wide range of advising services to answer your questions and help you take advantage of the opportunities that arise from the study of history.

Our Advisors

  • Academic Advisor – Our academic advisor, Scott Burkhardt, can discuss any questions or concerns regarding academics.  Scott is available to meet with students via scheduled appointments.  Schedule an appointment with him using Starfish.
  • Career Advising – For questions about post-graduation plans and internships, see our career connections advisor, Christina Matta.
  • History Certificate AdvisingIsabelle Cook and Holly Defnet can offer you advice about the History Certificate.  Any student with questions about the certificate, or wishing to declare it, should set up an appointment with either Isabelle or Holly through the History Starfish page.

History Major Gateway

The History Advising Team has developed a Canvas site for History majors. We designed the Gateway to be a shortcut to useful information about the major and to help students make the most of their History major. Anyone with a UW-Madison netID can access the site HERE.

Additional Advising Help

If you have specific academic questions regarding issues like credit changes, section changes, 600 registration, or other technical inquiries, stop by the office and see Sophie Olson, our Undergraduate Program Assistant.
