Tyler A. Lehrer, a graduate student in the Department of History at UW-Madison, has just published his first peer-reviewed article in Buddhist Studies Review. The article “Mobilizing Gendered Piety in Sri Lanka’s Contemporary BhikkunOrdination Dispute,” considers politicized representations of women’s piety in the context of controversial ordinations of Buddhist nuns in Sri Lanka.
Lehrer is a doctoral candidate in the Southeast Asia study program advised by Professor Anne Hansen. His dissertation considers eighteenth-century Buddhist lineage transmission between the island and mainland Southeast Asia, as it was mediated by the commercial ambition of the Dutch East India Company.
