Be on the lookout for good reading material to come later this year! Alumnus Jacob Blanc (Ph.D. 2017), will have his first authored book published in December of 2019. The title is Before the Flood: The Itaipu Dam and the Visibility of Rural Brazil (Duke University Press), and it focuses on the protest movements of rural Brazilians during the 1970s and 1980s against the construction of the Itaipu dam (the largest producer of hydroelectric power in the world) and the struggle between the dictatorship and a rural-based vision for democracy. Blanc is currently Lecturer in Latin American History in the School of History, Classics, & Archaeology at the University of Edinburgh. During his time at UW-Madison, Blanc was advised by Professors Florencia Mallon and Steve Stern.
