Professor Eliyahu Stern uses previously unexamined archival and published sources addressing Jewish themes in Marx’s writings to recover an early religious and nationalist reception of Marx in the Russian empire.

Stern is the author of The Genius: Elijah of Vilna and the Making of Modern Judaism (Yale, 2014) and Jewish Materialism: The Intellectual Revolution of the 1870s (Yale, forthcoming in 2018).
