Biography
I study twentieth-century international history, with a focus on empire, global governance, and international organizations. My research interests include international law, humanitarianism, slavery and forced labor, colonial administration, and the politics of sovereignty. I am especially interested in how international institutions became sites for producing new languages of reform and rights while also reproducing older imperial hierarchies. More broadly, my work asks how states, empires, NGOs, and actors in colonial and non-self-governing territories negotiated the meaning of legitimate rule in an unequal international order. Outside of my main research, I am also interested in African history, histories of decolonization, and the broader relationship between political mobilization, society, and international order.
