Biography
My research explores histories of gender and subject formation in postcolonial India, specifically the representation of the ideal Indian Man in films, 1950s- 1970s. The young nation-state exercised its positional superiority by forming ideals distant from the margins, and homogenous cultural articulations, contributing to the idea of national cohesion. I’m looking into the deviations, where this project is critiqued for creating disorder. Besides how the language of representing Self was devised and whose voices were prioritized, I’m keen to trace the political decisions behind the process. A sequence of developments will explain the cause-effect relationships and the turns of transition better. I use archival resources in regional languages, epistemologies and cultural practices to break down the complexities of a unique modernity served on South Asian screen.
