Catherine M. Burns (PhD 2011) is the recipient of the 2022 James Phinney Baxter Award for best article in the scholarly journal Maine History. “ ‘It May Be Questionable’: Granger v. Avery and the Redaction of Article X, Section 5 from the Maine Constitution” examines why Maine, since 1876, has excluded from the state constitution its duty to guarantee and defend Wabanaki treaties made with Massachusetts prior to Maine statehood. Her research also served as a basis for “REDACT: Obscuring the Maine Constitution,” a 2020 exhibition that she co-curated at the Maine Historical Society.
