Professor Nan Enstad has been awarded the prestigious Albert J. Beveridge Award from the American Historical Association for her recent book Cigarettes Inc.: An Intimate History of Corporate Imperialism (University of Chicago Press, 2018). The Beveridge Award is presented for a distinguished book written in the English language on the history of the United States, Latin America, or Canada, from 1492 to the present. Professor Enstad’s book, Cigarettes Inc., delves into the myriad global and cross-cultural encounters that produced the corporate capitalism of cigarette sales before World War II. Professor Enstad researches and teaches the history of capitalism, cultural history, and the history of food systems at UW-Madison. Her work foregrounds race, gender, sexuality, and labor.
