Biography
I am pursuing a joint Ph.D. in History and History of Science at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. I study the social, intellectual, and institutional history of science in medieval and early modern Europe. My particular interests include the relationship between science and religion, the institutions and patronage that supported scientific work, and the role of print in shaping the construction and sharing of scientific knowledge.
My dissertation examines the writings and publishing strategies of the seventeenth-century Jesuit Cristoforo Borri. In it, I investigate how Borri used his texts and his relationships with patrons and religious institutions to secure support for his astronomical work. His writings offer a way to understand how scholars pursued new and controversial ideas within uncertain social and institutional constraints, and how their choices about genre and rhetoric shaped both the knowledge they presented and the responses they sought from readers.
