About the Talk: This engaging talk examines how everyday digital platforms are subtly transforming women’s positions, agency, and economic participation in contemporary Turkey. It offers a nuanced look into the experiences and self-perceptions of housewives as they navigate online spaces for selling items. Drawing from her dissertation research, Asude Aydagül will discuss the origin of this perceived empowerment journey, revealing how the meanings of the money earned are shaped through socio-cultural dynamics.
About the Speaker: Asude Aydagül is a Consumer Insights Expert and a dissertator in the Consumer Behavior and Family Economics Program within the Department of Consumer Science at the School of Human Ecology. With nearly two decades of experience in market research, she specializes in qualitative methodologies—both traditional and innovative. Asude has contributed to numerous projects with leading market research firms in Turkey. Her doctoral research focuses on the lived experiences and perceived empowerment journeys of Turkish housewives using second-hand platforms to generate income. By examining the origin, process, and impact of this journey, her work offers a culturally grounded understanding of how digital platforms shape women’s economic and social positions in non-Western contexts.
