Catherine Jackson, Assistant Professor in the History of Science department, gave the keynote talk at the recent meeting of the Midwest Section of the American Scientific Glassblowers Society (ASGS) held on September 24th at the UW-Madison campus.
She spoke about the kaliapparat – a new kind of glass apparatus developed in 1830 by German chemist Justus von Liebig – which was used to determine the makeup of chemical compounds. So important was this device that it was selected as the logo of the American Chemical Society (ACS).
