Professor Marla Ramírez
UW-Madison, Dept. of History

5:00-6:30 PM
Curti Lounge, Rm 5233 humanities
Also on Zoom – Zoom Link

Professor Marla Ramírez is a historian of the U.S.-Mexico borderlands with specialization in oral history, Mexican repatriation, social and legal histories of Mexican migrations, and gendered immigration experiences. Her talk, “Gendered banishment: Rewriting Mexican repatriation through a transgenerational oral history methodology” examines her collaboration with banished women, their children, and grandchildren to construct a transgenerational, gendered Mexican American banishment archive. Where previous research focused mainly on the removal experiences of Mexican men, Professor Ramírez provides transgenerational perspectives of banished Mexican American women. Their recollections and the gendered archive they developed in collaboration help to provide a deeper understanding of Mexican American experiences within the subfields of gender and women’s history.

Sponsored by the Madison History Club and the UW-Madison Department of History
