Lecture: Dr. Tim Whitmarsh

March 5 @ 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm

“The Wandering Text: Books and the Imperial Migration Machine in the early Roman Empire”

Dr. Tim Whitmarsh
A.G. Leventis Professor of Greek Culture
University of Cambridge

Thursday, March 5, 2020
4:30- 5:30 PM
212 University Club

The Roman Empire was a migration machine: it constantly circulated people, objects, money, cults. This paper looks at the Greek novels (usually thought to be located firmly in the classical Greek past, though written in Roman times) as centrally defined by an obsession with the traffic in humans and goods. Indeed, I shall argue, the Greek novel is — in its fundamentals — a genre designed for migration.

The lecture will take place at the University Club room 212 and a reception will immediately follow in room 211. Audience members should use the side entrance, on the Chazen side of the building, 432 East Campus mall.

All are welcome!
