Fellowship Opportunities

• The Gerder Lerner Fellowship is awarded to a student entering the Program in Gender and Women’s History.  The fellowship is open to students in any geographic field of history.  It consists of a four-year package of support, including two years of fellowship, tuition, and health insurance, and two years of support from a TA-ship or Research Assistant job, that provides stipend, tuition, and health insurance.  The fellowship is sponsored by Professor Emerita Gerda Lerner.  She founded the Program in Women’s History at the University of Wisconsin in 1981. She is an internationally renowned historian and activist, recognized for her pathbreaking scholarship and her institution-building.  She played a central role in creation of women’s history as a field. Her many books include  The Grimké sisters from South Carolina; pioneers for woman’s rights and abolition (1971);   Black women in white America: a documentary history(1972);  A death of one’s own (1978);  The majority finds its past : placing women in history (1979);  The creation of patriarchy (1986);  The creation of feminist consciousness from the Middle Ages to Eighteen‑seventy (1993);  Why history matters : life and thought (1997); Fireweed : a political autobiography (2002).
