Bio Sketch:

My specializations are Revolutionary America, historical memory, the South to 1835, and slavery in the Atlantic world.

My Research and Teaching Interests include American Revolution, the memory of the Revolution (1775-1876), the Chesapeake in the 18th century.

  • “The Price of Nationhood: The American Revolution in Charles County” (NY: W. W. Norton, 1994; paperback 1995), awarded prizes from the Maryland Historical Soc. And the Amer. Assoc. for State & Local History.
  • "Historical Memory, Sectional Strife, and the American Mecca: Mount Vernon, 1783-1853," Virginia Magazine of History and Biography (2001), awarded the Rachal Prize for best article in VMHB in 2001.
  • "Mount Vernon Plantation: A Model for the Republic," in Slavery at the Home of George Washington, ed. P. J. Sschwarz (2001).
