I was educated at Oberlin College (A.B. 1949) and Columbia University (M.A., 1950; Ph.D. 1955) and the University of Geneva (1951-1952) I taught at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst (1952-1957), the University of Iowa (1947-1965), and the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1965-1998). I am a specialist on European history of the Reformation period, particularly in French-speaking countries. I have worked on the history of Calvinist ecclesiastical institutions, particularly the Geneva Company of Pastors and the Geneva Consistory, and have been involved with others in editing the hitherto unpublished registers of minutes of their meetings. I have also worked on the history of political thought as developed by religious leaders of the period, including John Calvin, Theodore Beza, Peter Martyr Vermigli, and Cardinal William Allen, editing some of their relevant works. I have also worked on the history of printing during the Reformation period.
