"Transnational Imaginings, Principled Protestations: Massachusetts Missionaries and the War of 1812"

Research Interests:
I am currently interested in how nineteenth-century Americans reinforced and renegotiated notions of national identity and cultural/religious belonging—in short, how residents of the Gilded Age might go about answering the question “What does it mean to be an American?” In particular, I am intrigued by how Americans saw the Church of Latter-Day Saints in relation to Islam in general (and the Ottoman Empire in particular). The intersection of gender, religion, and print culture in nineteenth-century discussions of identity is also an area of special interest for me and informs a number of my projects.
