My field of focus lies primarily with the broad subject of Roman imperialism. Most of the topics with which I engage pertain to cultural issues within the Roman world, such as the mentality of the society toward expansion, the influence that Roman mores had (or did not have) on conquered peoples, and marks of resistance that were prevalent among native populations. In essence, what interests me most is the very nature of empire itself: how it develops and changes over time. I am therefore also drawn to assessing imperial societies comparatively in an effort to elicit answers to the question of how an empire is defined, re-defined, and understood by its contemporaries.
