Hogan bio

UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN -- MADISON
DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY

Margaret A. Hogan is a graduate student in the department of history at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Originally from Connecticut, she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Swarthmore College in 1992. After graduation, she worked for three years in book publishing, most recently as a project editor for Oxford University Press in New York City. Maggie currently focuses on American religious history. Her first master’s paper, entitled "‘Our Work Is . . . a Community Work’: Pilgrim Congregational Church, Madison, 1895–1930," examines the fundamental role of Pilgrim Church’s ladies’ guild in creating a viable, community-oriented church. Her second paper examines the writings of Joseph Rodes Buchanan, a nineteenth-century philosopher and scientist who attempted to create an overarching world philosophy incorporating popular notions of both science and religion. In her copious free time, Maggie enjoys cooking, music, especially the operettas of Gilbert and Sullivan, and rooting for any and all New England sports teams.
